The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that the anti-graft agency is currently investigating 18 sitting governors across the country.
Olukoyede made the revelation on Friday during a sensitisation programme in Lagos aimed at raising awareness about the abuse and mutilation of the naira.
The event was attended by stakeholders, including film producers and bureau de change operators.
Speaking during a question-and-answer session, the EFCC boss explained that the Commission does not always wait for governors to complete their tenures before launching investigations into their activities.
“As I’m talking to you, we are investigating 18 governors who are still serving. When they leave office, we will go to the next level,” Olukoyede said.
He recounted a bizarre incident involving a former governor who fled Nigeria a day after leaving office, in an attempt to avoid EFCC arrest.
According to him, the ex-governor travelled to the United Kingdom and hosted a birthday party where he began spraying British pounds in large denominations, drawing the attention of the hotel management.
“The manager, who had never seen such a thing before, thought the man was mentally unstable and called 911.
The Metropolitan Police arrived and were about to put the former governor in an ambulance when some of his friends, including two serving governors, intervened,” Olukoyede narrated.
Although the EFCC boss did not name any of the governors under investigation, his statement suggests the agency is quietly gathering evidence that may lead to prosecution once the concerned officials leave office.
The development underscores the Commission’s continued efforts to clamp down on high-level corruption in public office and to pursue cases even at the highest levels of government.
Olukoyede’s revelation has already sparked conversations on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the depth of alleged corruption among the nation’s political elite.
EFCC has in recent years intensified its anti-corruption campaigns and enforcement actions, despite criticisms of selective prosecution and political interference.
