The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its nationwide crackdown on illicit drug trafficking, arresting 15 suspects and seizing large quantities of banned substances during coordinated raids across eight states.
NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the operations, which were carried out between Wednesday and Saturday, led to the recovery of various narcotics, including tramadol, skunk, opioids, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and a locally-brewed cocktail known as “skuchies.”
According to Babafemi, in Kano State, operatives arrested a major drug suspect along the Danbatta-Kazaure Road on Wednesday, with 36,000 pills of tramadol in his possession.
In Gombe State, a double raid on Friday yielded 25,000 pills of tramadol and extol-5 from one suspect at the Gombe Roundabout, while two others were nabbed in Kwadom, Yemaltu Deba Local Government Area with 49 blocks of compressed skunk weighing 29kg.
In Borno, officers intercepted 74,360 pills of opioids in a Mercedes Benz C180 along Baga Road, Maiduguri, on Saturday. A 44-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.
Also on Saturday, a separate intelligence-led operation in Chikun LGA, Kaduna State, resulted in the arrest of three suspects during a raid at the Narayi High Cost area.
The agency also busted a notorious drug ring in Bayelsa State, where a 63-year-old grandmother was arrested on Thursday at Osiri area of Yenagoa for possessing 163 litres of “skuchies,” a dangerous mix of alcohol and illicit substances.
Four suspects were also apprehended on Thursday along the Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State. They were transporting 2kg of methamphetamine in a vehicle reportedly en route from Onitsha, Anambra, to Minna, Niger State.
In a separate incident in Abia State, NDLEA operatives on Monday, July 14, stormed a suspected drug dealer’s base at 4, Niger Street, Ugwa Road, Aba, where they recovered various quantities of tramadol, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and N736,000 believed to be proceeds of drug transactions.
Furthermore, the agency uncovered a suspected drug distribution hub in Kosofe, Lagos State, following credible intelligence and surveillance. During a raid at a 20-room family-run hotel located at 115 Ogudu Road, officers arrested a wanted suspect and recovered 1.3kg of chocolate cannabis, 900 grams of drug-laced gummies, and 22.9 grams of skunk. Three vehicles were also confiscated from the premises.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), has commended the operatives for their diligence, stressing the agency’s commitment to ridding Nigerian communities of drug-related criminality.
“These operations reflect our zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking. We will continue to disrupt supply chains, dismantle cartels, and prosecute offenders,” Marwa stated.
The NDLEA urged Nigerians to support the fight against drug abuse by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
