.. 2023 Win Sealed by Awujale’s Prayers — Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s political history would have remained incomplete had he not emerged victorious in the 2023 presidential election, attributing part of his success to the spiritual support of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
Tinubu made this known on Sunday in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, during the 8th Day Fidau prayer held in honour of the revered monarch who died recently after decades on the throne.
Addressing dignitaries and residents at the solemn gathering, the President paid glowing tribute to Oba Adetona, describing him as a courageous royal father who supported Nigeria’s democratic journey, including the historic June 12 struggle.
“Our national story would not have been richly and carefully completed if I had lost the 2023 presidential election,” Tinubu said.
“I was successful because of your support and the blessing of the late Awujale. I came to him, he blessed me.
He said, ‘You will win the election and win one more time. Go ahead.’ Today, he is no more. He is gone.”
The President eulogised the late monarch for his wisdom, patriotism, and consistent stand for justice and democracy, calling him a towering figure whose legacy transcends Ijebuland and Ogun State.
Tinubu also commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, whom he fondly described as the “Okanlomo Eleyi of Ogun State,” for his commitment and leadership during the burial rites of the late king.
In his remarks, Governor Abiodun called on the people of Ijebuland to remain united and uphold the values of peace and harmony which the late Awujale championed throughout his reign.
He urged residents to honour the memory of the monarch through acts that reflect integrity, leadership, and service to humanity.
Delivering the sermon, the Chief Imam of Gbagura, Prof. Kamaldeen Balogun, reminded the congregation about the inevitability of death, urging them to live righteously.
“We will all taste death. So live as though today is your last,” the cleric warned.
The prayer was attended by an array of dignitaries, including the governors of Kwara, Ondo, and Ekiti States; deputy governors of Oyo and Lagos States; ministers; traditional rulers; and other notable personalities from across the country.
Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most respected traditional rulers. His reign was marked by his unwavering advocacy for democratic values and social justice.
