Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for the forthcoming Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election, Dr. Islamiyat Oluwatoyin Abdulkadir, has declared her readiness to win the August 16 poll, pledging to offer purposeful and inclusive representation if elected.
Dr Abdulkadir, a 32-year-old medical doctor and cancer researcher with a track record of grassroots medical outreach and public service, emerged as the SDP’s standard-bearer after what her campaign described as a “rigorous internal selection process.”
Speaking shortly after her emergence, the UK-trained oncologist said her ambition was driven by a passion for service and a desire to “redefine public leadership with competence, compassion, and integrity.”
“We are not in this race to make up the numbers. We are here to win and serve,” she told PLATFORM TIMES, adding that her campaign would focus on people-centred issues that affect daily life in Ibadan North.
Dr Abdulkadir unveiled a five-point legislative agenda centred on healthcare, education, women and youth empowerment, security, and community-focused governance.
According to her, the plan includes expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare, promoting digital literacy in public schools, and launching initiatives to support small businesses and startups led by women and young people.
A First-Class graduate of Medicine with a postgraduate degree in Cancer Research and Precision Oncology, she is best known for initiating Nigeria’s first Medico-political Symposium — a platform she said was designed to connect policy and health outcomes.
“Our people deserve leaders who understand policy, service delivery, and community engagement. I have worked in hospitals, villages, and international labs. Now I am ready to work for my people in the National Assembly,” she stated.
The bye-election was necessitated by the death of Hon. Musiliu Akinremi, the former lawmaker representing the constituency in the House of Representatives.
Dr Abdulkadir has so far received praise from youth and civil society groups for what many described as “a refreshing, issue-based campaign.”
Her growing grassroots support across communities in Ibadan North is seen by observers as a strong sign that the race could take a surprising turn.
She concluded with a rallying call to the electorate: “This is a movement, not just a campaign. Let us birth a new era — one where representation is rooted in service, not self-interest.”
