The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday said more than 69,000 Nigerians completed their online pre-registration for voter cards within the first seven hours of resuming its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja.
According to him, the online registration portal, which went live at 8:30 a.m., had recorded 69,376 applications by 3:30 p.m. the same day.
A breakdown of the figure showed that 33,803 (48.7 per cent) were male, while 35,573 (51.3 per cent) were female. Young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 34 accounted for 48,033, representing 69.2 per cent of the total.
Olumekun explained that the portal would remain open 24 hours daily via https://cvr.inecnigeria.org, stressing that the commission was encouraged by the early turnout.
He further announced that in-person registration would commence on Monday, August 25, at 811 state and local government offices nationwide between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays.
“The physical centres will serve those who prefer to register in person as well as those who have started the process online and need to complete biometrics capture,” he said.
The commissioner clarified that both online and in-person registration options would run simultaneously throughout the CVR exercise as earlier scheduled.
He also revealed that INEC would begin releasing weekly updates from next week, with detailed breakdowns of registrations by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability.
“For emphasis, registration is strictly for Nigerian citizens who are 18 years and above and have never registered before. Double registration remains a criminal offence,” Olumekun warned.
He, however, noted that Nigerians could use the CVR period to transfer their registration between states or the Federal Capital Territory, or apply for replacement of lost or damaged voter cards.
The resumption of the CVR exercise comes as part of preparations by the electoral body ahead of upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and the 2027 general elections.
