The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday confirmed Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party.
The decision was one of the major resolutions adopted during the 102nd NEC meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
Damagum, who had been serving in an acting capacity since March 2023, took the oath of office administered by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, in line with Article 65 of the PDP Constitution.
His confirmation comes less than three months to the party’s elective national convention, which is scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16.
In his acceptance speech, Damagum expressed gratitude to the NEC and members of the National Working Committee (NWC), describing the decision as a vote of confidence in the leadership.
“Before now, I thought all we were doing was not being appreciated. This gesture is not just for me, but for the entire NWC. We came in at a time when things were very hard, but to the glory of God, we are still intact as one indivisible party,” he said.
Damagum became acting chairman on March 28, 2023, following a Benue State High Court ruling that confirmed the removal of former chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. Prior to that, he served as Deputy National Chairman (North).
The PDP leadership has assured that preparations for the November convention are on course, with stakeholders across the country expected to converge on Ibadan to elect new national officers who will steer the party into the 2027 general elections.
