Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has introduced a new dress code for civil servants in the state, banning braided or tinted hair, artificial nails, long eyelashes, bushy beards, and certain traditional caps in government offices.
The directive, contained in a circular issued by the governor’s New Media Office on Thursday, made complete suits compulsory for male and female workers on Grade Level 13 and above, while those on lower levels are expected to appear in corporate attire.
According to the circular, the move became necessary to curb what the government described as “the unpleasant practice of improper dressing” among public servants.
It stated, “This review of the existing dress code is aimed at upholding decency in the appearance of public servants across Delta State. Senior officers are expected to lead by example in demonstrating appropriate dressing culture, and sanctions will be applied where necessary in line with Public Service Rule No.04314.”
Under the new rules, male civil servants must wear suits, shirts with ties, or traditional attire only on Fridays and special occasions. However, the use of “resource control and papas caps” is banned, while bushy beards are expressly prohibited.
For female civil servants, the government approved only trouser suits, skirt suits, or corporate gowns below the knee, with all trousers required to be part of suits.
Sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps, provocative clothing, braided or tinted hair, artificial nails, and long eyelashes are outlawed.
Traditional attire will be permitted only on Fridays or during official ceremonies, provided it reflects modesty and cultural decency.
Heads of departments have been directed to enforce strict compliance, with erring officers ordered to return home to change or face disciplinary sanctions.
The government maintained that the decision was taken “in cognizance of Delta State’s diverse cultural backgrounds” and to promote discipline within the state’s public service.
