A former President of the Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria), CPN, Prof. A. S. Sodiya, has rejected his disqualification from contesting in the forthcoming 2025 elections of the Council, describing the action as illegal, undemocratic, and a ploy to impose a preferred candidate.
Sodiya, in a protest letter addressed to the Council’s President and Chairman, Mr. Kole Jagun, and obtained by PLATFORM TIMES in Abeokuta, faulted the grounds of his exclusion, saying it was based on “untenable and selfish reasons.”
He explained that the Council barred him from contesting on the excuse that, as the immediate past president, he remained a statutory member of the Council.
According to him, this interpretation is wrong and was deliberately promoted by a clique desperate to compromise the electoral process.
“I totally disagree with the decision of CPN Council to disqualify me from contesting the 2025 CPN election.
“This illegal decision was anticipated from the leadership of the current Council because it has never exhibited fairness and justice in the electoral process from the onset,” he wrote.
Sodiya further revealed that the Council ignored a legal advice from its head of legal department which affirmed his eligibility to contest. He accused some members of turning themselves into “constitutional lawyers and judges” by interpreting the matter based on personal bias rather than law.
“The standard and noble practice is for CPN Council to consult two more lawyers for additional advice if not satisfied with the position of its own lawyer. It has shown from the attitudes of some unscrupulous members that they do not wish CPN well but rather want a candidate of their choice to illegitimately emerge as CPN President,” he stated.
While insisting that the CPN Act does not prohibit statutory members from contesting elections, Sodiya condemned the disqualification as “an act of impunity and total disregard for electoral guidelines.”
He, therefore, urged the Council to reverse its decision, warning that failure to do so would damage the credibility of the forthcoming election.
“CPN belongs to all of us. Our elections must be conducted in good faith and according to our extant laws,” the former president added.
