President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to permit the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, over an alleged forgery of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.
The call was made by the Convener of the League for Good Governance, Isaiah Ijele, during an interview on Arise Television at the weekend, monitored by The DEFENDER.
Ijele argued that the rule of law and the integrity of the Tinubu administration would be tested by how it handles the allegations surrounding the minister.
He said, “Alleged certificate forgery led to the resignation of the former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, and, more recently, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Uche Nnaji. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo’s case should not be treated differently, regardless of his performance as minister.”
The activist stressed that the President must not shield anyone accused of forgery from investigation. “If President Tinubu refuses to allow the DSS to investigate the minister over the NYSC allegations, it will undermine the rule of law in Nigeria,” Ijele warned.
The Minister of Interior, who hails from Akoko in Ondo State, has in recent times been trailed by several controversies — from his time as Chairman, House Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to alleged irregularities in recruitments into paramilitary agencies under his ministry.
However, the latest allegation — involving claims that he forged his NYSC certificate — has attracted widespread public attention and criticism from civil society groups and opposition figures.
Ijele maintained that the President’s credibility and commitment to transparency would be judged by his response to the case. “This administration has a chance to prove that no one is above the law,” he said.
He called for a swift, transparent, and independent investigation to either clear Tunji-Ojo’s name or hold him accountable if found guilty.
“We cannot build a nation on selective justice,” Ijele added. “What applies to Adeosun and Nnaji must also apply to Tunji-Ojo. Anything less is hypocrisy.”
