The Rotary Club of Abeokuta Royal, District 9111, has expanded its community economic empowerment scheme to support more women traders at Kuto Market in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a bid to strengthen small businesses and deepen financial independence among grassroots entrepreneurs.
The empowerment initiative, held on Thursday, saw six market women receive ₦50,000 each alongside business orientation and capacity-building training, despite an initial plan to empower only four beneficiaries.
Speaking at the event, the club’s Co-Chairman on Community Economic Development, Rotarian Akinola Bayo, said the club’s commitment to lifting women in business informed the expansion.
“This project is a great opportunity that gives market women the ability to go further in their trade. We want to empower them with the right support so they can stand on their feet and grow,” he said.
Bayo stressed that grassroots women traders face financial and knowledge-based barriers that often hinder business growth, adding that Rotary is committed to bridging those gaps.
President of the club, Rotarian (Arc.) Oluyemi Ogunmuyiwa, said the decision to increase the beneficiaries was driven by the realities encountered on the field.
“We initially selected four women, but when we saw the genuine need and the number of people struggling to keep their businesses alive, we extended it to six,” the president said.
“We are determined to continue touching lives and strengthening communities across Ogun State.”
In her orientation session, Rotarian Akinode urged the women to remain focused, develop business discipline, and avoid jumping from one trade to another.
“Before you start a business, have a clear ambition and commitment,” she cautioned.
“You must also cultivate a strong savings culture. Consistent contributions and disciplined savings are key to staying afloat and building wealth.”
One of the beneficiaries, visibly emotional, described the gesture as a lifeline.
“This support will help me expand my business and take care of my family. I am very grateful,” she said.
The empowerment is part of the club’s ongoing community development agenda, targeted at boosting women-owned micro-businesses, reducing financial vulnerability, and promoting self-reliance.
The Rotary Club of Abeokuta Royal vowed to sustain the programme and widen its impact across Ogun communities.
