A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced a 19-year-old private school teacher, Abdullahi Abbass, to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting his nine-year-old pupil.
Justice M. Osho-Adebiyi delivered the verdict on October 29, 2025, after finding Abbass guilty of raping the minor in violation of Section 2 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, which prescribes life jail for offenders.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, Vincent Adekoye, said Abbass lured the victim from his home after school hours on March 19, 2025, and forcefully had anal intercourse with him.
“The convict, who was the victim’s class teacher, sent another pupil to call the child from his home. He then took the boy to a nearby street and raped him through the anus,” NAPTIP said.
The boy is said to have immediately reported the assault to his mother, who alerted authorities, leading to Abbass’ arrest and prosecution.
The Director-General of NAPTIP, Binta Adamu Bello, hailed the judgment, describing it as a significant victory in the fight against sexual abuse of minors.
“This judgment is a landmark and will serve as a strong deterrent to predators. His name will be entered in the Sex Offenders Register,” Bello said.
She commended security agencies and the judiciary for what she called “speedy investigation and diligent prosecution”, adding that the agency remains committed to collaborating with law-enforcement partners to eradicate sexual violence in the country.
This conviction adds to a growing list of sexual abuse cases being prosecuted across Nigeria. In June this year, an Anambra court sentenced 34-year-old teacher Pascal Ofomata to 12 years imprisonment for defiling his 11-year-old male student at St. Christopher’s Junior Seminary, Onitsha.
Rights advocates say the increasing convictions reflect rising awareness and reporting of child-sex crimes nationwide.
