The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Sufiyanu Aliyu, for allegedly stabbing his 15-year-old wife, Suwaiba Abubakar, to death during a domestic dispute in Tangaza Local Government Area of the state.
The tragic incident occurred on October 27 at the couple’s residence in Gwanyal village and was reported to the police by a concerned resident.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said operatives were immediately mobilised to the scene after receiving the distress report.
“The area was visited, processed and cordoned off for forensic analysis,” Rufai stated, adding that the suspect was arrested at the scene with a knife believed to be the murder weapon.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had a heated argument that escalated into violence, resulting in the fatal attack.
“Allegedly, Aliyu used a knife to inflict fatal injuries on the victim, leading to her death. The suspect has voluntarily confessed to the crime during interrogation,” the police spokesman said.
He disclosed that the victim’s body was taken to a hospital where a medical doctor confirmed her death.
According to Rufai, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, while the suspect has already been charged to court.
He commended the swift response of officers who handled the case and reassured the public of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
Rufai urged residents to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The incident has sparked fresh concern over underage marriage and rising domestic violence cases in parts of the country.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that Sokoto, like some northern states, has battled increasing cases of domestic abuse, with rights advocates calling for stronger measures to protect young girls and women in domestic settings.
