The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has launched a manhunt for a man who allegedly brutalised his wife, leaving her in critical condition and requiring emergency surgery in Abuja.
The woman, whose identity was withheld for security reasons, was rushed to a hospital in the Gudu area after sustaining life-threatening injuries from the violent attack, according to a statement on Wednesday by the head of NAPTIP’s Rapid Response Unit, Emeh Magnus.
Mr Magnus disclosed that NAPTIP officials monitored the victim’s surgery and are working with medical personnel to gather evidence.
He said operatives proceeded to the suspect’s residence in Jabi to arrest him but were reportedly blocked by a retired military officer who insisted the assault was a “private family matter” and allegedly aided the suspect’s escape.
“The operatives were prevented from gaining access by a retired military officer, who insisted the case was a private family matter,” Mr Magnus said. “The officer then facilitated the suspect’s escape to an unknown location.”
Following the obstruction, NAPTIP raised an inter-agency alert and notified the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Immigration Service and military authorities to track down the suspect.
The agency has also flagged the suspect’s international passport to prevent him from fleeing the country.
Mr Magnus said the Inspector-General of Police and Chief of Defence Staff had been formally notified about the retired officer’s alleged interference in the arrest process.
“Domestic violence is a criminal offence under Nigerian law. Anyone aiding a suspect will also be investigated,” he warned. “We remain committed to ensuring justice for victims of domestic violence. This case will be pursued to its lawful conclusion.”
He confirmed that the victim is now in stable condition and is under close medical observation.
The incident has renewed concerns over rising domestic violence cases across Nigeria, with activists urging authorities to ensure the suspect and all accomplices face the law.
