Suspected bandits on Friday evening opened fire on a bus conveying members of the National Congress of Evangelisation, Operation Good News from Oyo State along the Eruku–Obbo Ile axis of Ekiti Local Government Area, Kwara State.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the team was on its way to Shagbe, a village in Ifelodun Local Government Area, when the gunmen emerged from the bush and shot sporadically at the vehicle.
A source who witnessed the attack said the gunmen appeared from both sides of the road, forcing the driver to swerve dangerously as bullets riddled the bus.
“One of the passengers was hit by a bullet, but the driver managed to speed away. That was how they escaped a more tragic outcome,” the source said.
The injured passenger was later rushed to a nearby cottage hospital, where he was receiving treatment as of press time.
Residents said the Eruku–Yagba corridor has become a hotbed of violent attacks and kidnappings, lamenting that security agencies have yet to contain the recurring menace.
Both Eruku and Yagba, border communities between Kwara and Kogi states, have witnessed several abductions and armed assaults in recent months.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the situation as “a nightmare for travellers and farmers,” urging security agencies to intensify patrols along the route.
Security sources confirmed that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and local vigilantes had been deployed to the area to hunt down the attackers.
The latest assault comes barely a week after gunmen raided Igbonla community in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state, abducting several residents.
The repeated attacks have heightened fears among residents of Kwara South, many of whom now avoid night travel and rely on community vigilante groups for protection.
