The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Angel Oyeghe, the self-proclaimed archbishop and founder of Faith Healing Ministry in Warri, Delta State, over a controversial church ritual that involved spraying naira notes on a live cow.
The arrest, confirmed in a statement by the EFCC on Wednesday, followed the circulation of a viral video showing several individuals under Oyeghe’s supervision engaging in the act during a church service.
“The Commission is on the trail of other suspects involved, as their actions contravene Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007,” the statement read.
“Archbishop Oyeghe has made useful statements and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
EFCC operatives from the Benin Zonal Directorate carried out the arrest on Tuesday, marking another high-profile crackdown by the anti-graft agency on financial crimes in religious organizations.
According to the commission, Oyeghe is expected to face charges including conspiracy, naira mutilation, and alleged money laundering.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with Nigerians questioning the legality and ethics of using currency in religious ceremonies, especially on animals.
The EFCC has vowed to pursue all suspects connected to the act and reiterated its commitment to enforcing financial and anti-corruption laws, warning that violations will attract legal consequences.
