A 24-year-old convict, Usama Abdullahi, has narrated how he stole packs of noodles to impress his three girlfriends — only for all of them to abandon him throughout his time in custody.
Abdullahi, who worked at a car wash in Shelleng Local Government Area of Adamawa State, made the confession when he appeared before the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee, a mobile court constituted to review cases and decongest custodial centres.
According to Daily Trust, the young man said he fled to another town after the theft but was eventually arrested and sentenced to two years in prison at the Shelleng Satellite Custodial Facility.
“I stole Indomie and distributed it to my three girlfriends,” Abdullahi told the committee.
“But since I arrived at this facility, none of them has visited me. I promise to end the relationship with them all once I gain my freedom.”
The remark drew murmurs in the court, with committee members expressing concern over the circumstances that led to his imprisonment.
Following his plea, Hafsat Abdulrahman, Chairperson of the Jail Delivery Committee, reviewed his case and ordered that his sentence be converted to community service.
Abdulrahman said the intervention aligned with the committee’s mandate to ensure that minor offenders are not unnecessarily kept behind bars, especially where alternatives could aid correction and reintegration.
The committee has been touring correctional facilities across the state with the aim of reducing congestion and addressing cases of inmates serving terms deemed disproportionate to their offences.
Abdullahi is expected to regain his freedom after completing the community service period.
