Veteran journalist and political commentator, Dele Momodu, has disclosed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may select former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election if former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi declines the offer.
Speaking on Sunday, Momodu, a close political ally of Atiku, urged Obi to join forces with the former vice president to form a strong opposition coalition capable of challenging the ruling party.
“Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar are the only figures who can deliver the strongest opposition alliance since 2019,” Momodu said.
“We have met several times, in Lagos and Ghana. If Obi does not seize this opportunity, it would be equivalent to working for Tinubu’s return.”
Momodu noted that Atiku’s camp had initially focused on Obi, but hinted that Amaechi could be considered as a strategic alternative.
“A lot of people are underrating Amaechi. He mobilised massive support for Buhari during his tenure, even more than Tinubu. If Obi does not make up his mind or chooses to run alone, the mantle might fall on Rotimi Amaechi,” he stated.
The political commentator also criticised what he described as public pushback from Obi’s supporters, which he said had delayed a final decision on the prospective partnership.
He warned that procrastination could cost Obi a significant political opportunity ahead of the 2027 elections.
Momodu further expressed concern about the current political landscape.
“The person you want to dislodge is already in power. He is coercing governors and senators to present a false image that he is unbeatable.
Despite all their manoeuvres in 2023, they still lost Lagos to Obi and Osun to Governor Ademola Adeleke. Obi needs to decide quickly where he wants to go, because PDP is crumbling, LP has crumbled,” he added.
Atiku and Obi had previously been allies during the 2019 elections under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) banner but lost to then-incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.
Political watchers believe the new potential alliance could significantly reshape the opposition landscape in Nigeria.
