The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has stirred intense public debate after a video emerged showing him performing ushering duties at the ongoing Shiloh 2025 programme of the Living Faith Church, popularly known as Winners’ Chapel.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media on Saturday, captured the governor dressed simply as he assisted worshippers, directed congregants to seats and coordinated movement within the church auditorium, actions traditionally reserved for church volunteers.
While many attendees at the annual faith gathering described the moment as a rare display of humility by a sitting governor, the incident has also triggered mixed reactions across political and civic circles, with critics questioning the optics and timing of the governor’s conduct.
Observers at the event said Oborevwori was actively involved in assisting worshippers throughout the service, a gesture that quickly drew attention from fellow congregants.
A church member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “It shows humility and a heart for service. Seeing a sitting governor serve willingly in God’s house is inspiring and speaks to leadership by example.”
Supporters of the governor have since praised the act, describing it as a reflection of strong moral values, faith and closeness to the people, particularly at a time when public office holders are often accused of being disconnected from ordinary citizens.
However, the development also sparked outrage in some quarters, with critics arguing that the governor’s public appearance in such a role could blur the line between governance and religious engagement.
Some commentators on social media questioned whether a sitting governor should be seen performing church duties amid mounting economic and security challenges facing the state and the country at large.
