In classrooms across Nigeria, from public secondary schools to private colleges and tertiary institutions, a quiet but profound transformation has begun.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that,chalkboards are gradually giving way to smart screens, handwritten notes to digital documents, and traditional libraries to online databases.
At the heart of this shift lies one critical factor: digital skills.
As Computer-Based Tests (CBTs), online research, virtual classrooms, and artificial intelligence-driven tools become embedded in the education system, students’ ability to acquire and deploy digital skills is increasingly shaping their academic performance.
A PLATFORM TIMES special report examines how digital literacy is influencing learning outcomes, drawing from student interviews, expert insights, and available data from Nigerian schools, while also interrogating the challenges and future prospects.
Nigeria’s education sector has witnessed accelerated digital adoption in the last decade.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) fully transitioned to CBT in 2015, compelling millions of candidates annually to demonstrate basic computer literacy.
According to JAMB statistics, over 1.9 million candidates sat for the 2024 UTME using CBT platforms, underscoring how digital competence has become non-negotiable.
Similarly, reports from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) indicate that schools with functional ICT facilities and digitally trained teachers record higher student engagement and improved assessment outcomes, particularly in research-based subjects.
Education analysts note that students exposed to digital tools show better performance in: information retrieval and research, presentation and communication skills, independent learning, and problem-solving.
“Digital learning improves digital literacy and enables students to develop skills in using technology and online tools.
This significantly enhances their learning experience and academic performance.”
Interviews conducted by PLATFORM TIMES across secondary schools in Ogun State reveal that students are increasingly engaging with a wide range of digital skills beyond basic computer operation.
These include: graphic design and content creation; video editing and multimedia presentation; coding and programming; web development; cloud computing; and mobile app development.
Education stakeholders argue that even when students do not pursue these skills professionally, exposure enhances logical thinking, creativity, and adaptability—competencies directly linked to better academic outcomes.
Olasupo Oladeji, an education advocate, notes:
“A student without digital experience will struggle to participate effectively in CBT exams, which are now the standard. Digital skills are no longer optional; they are foundational.”
To understand the real impact, PLATFORM TIMES spoke with students from various schools in Ogun State, capturing diverse perspectives shaped by direct experience.
Odediran Blessed, Baptist Boys’ High School, warns: “artificial intelligence is good, but when it is not checkmated, it becomes a threat to education. Nowadays, at the slightest difficulty, students go to ChatGPT for answers. It can even aid examination malpractice.”
Oladele Hamida, Radiant Minds College, is more optimistic: “Digital tools help me when I have a stumbling block in my assignments. They make things clearer, especially when I don’t have someone to guide me. Discipline is key.”
Oyinola Abidoye, African Church Grammar School, observes:“AI has helped me a lot, especially in research. It has boosted my academic standing, but overdependence can encourage laziness.”
Salako Adewuyi Farida, Radiant Minds College, expresses concern about cognitive decline:
“If you use it too often, it can damage the brain. You won’t be able to think on your own. Guidance from teachers or professionals is essential.”
PLATFORM TIMES attended recent UNICEF workshops on digital literacy and learning innovation in Lagos where resource persons highlighted how structured digital education interventions can shape student outcomes positively.
One of the resources persons said:“Digital skills are critical for Nigeria’s next generation, not only for academic success but also for social and economic empowerment.
Structured guidance is essential—students need to learn how to use AI and other tools ethically and responsibly.”
Another resource person explained: “During our workshops, we observed that students who receive hands-on training with digital tools perform better in research and critical thinking exercises. Tools like AI should complement classroom learning, not replace it.
Studies conducted by Nigerian education-focused NGOs indicate that students with access to digital learning tools: Score 10–20% higher in research-based assessments
Show improved performance in English Language, ICT, and social sciences
Demonstrate greater confidence during CBT examinations
However, unsupervised AI usage correlates with reduced originality in assignments and weaker critical thinking skills among some students. UNICEF experts stress that guided use mitigates these risks.
Despite its benefits, digital learning in Nigeria faces several hurdles: Poor internet connectivity, especially in rural areas ; limited digital training for teachers ; overdependence on AI tools, leading to reduced independent thinking ; weak policies on AI use in schools and increasing the risk of malpractice.
Education experts warn that without proper guidelines, digital tools could undermine learning integrity.
UNICEF facilitators also stress that teacher mentorship and structured curricula are essential to maximize learning benefits.
Looking ahead, stakeholders agree that digital skills will play an even bigger role in shaping academic success.
With deliberate investment in ICT infrastructure, teacher training, and clear policies on AI use, Nigeria stands to benefit from:
More inclusive and flexible learning systems
Improved global competitiveness of students
Enhanced innovation and problem-solving capacity
Qudus Durojaiye, a youth development advocate, sums it up: “Digital skills enlighten students, expand their access to information, and improve academic performance. But discipline and guidance are key.”
UNICEF resource persons also emphasized structured monitoring:
“Technology should complement, not replace, traditional learning. With supervision, digital tools can unlock potential while preserving critical thinking and creativity,” Dr. Adebayo noted.
Digital skills are undeniably revolutionising learning for Nigerian students. From improving research abilities to enhancing performance in CBT exams, their impact is visible and growing.
Yet, as students themselves caution, the benefits can only be sustained if digital tools are used ethically, moderately, and under proper supervision.
