President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that no Nigerian should be made to suffer, face violence or discrimination for practising their religion, insisting that religious freedom remains non-negotiable under his administration.
In his 2025 Christmas goodwill message released on Tuesday, the President called for renewed commitment to religious tolerance, peaceful coexistence and national unity, stressing that faith must never become a source of division or conflict in the country.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to draw lessons from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, particularly the values of love, peace and compassion, which he said are essential for harmonious living in a multi-religious society like Nigeria.
He reaffirmed that since assuming office in 2023, his government has prioritised national security, unity and stability, adding that protecting the constitutional right of every citizen to worship freely remains central to his leadership.
“As your President, I remain firmly committed to doing everything within my power to enshrine religious freedom in Nigeria and to protect people of all faiths from violence and persecution,” Tinubu said.
“All Nigerians have the right to live, worship and pursue their aspirations in safety and dignity. No one, regardless of ethnicity or belief, should be made to suffer for professing and practising his faith.”
The President disclosed that his administration has sustained engagements with leaders of Nigeria’s two major religions to address rising concerns over religious intolerance, insecurity and faith-based tensions in some parts of the country.
According to him, the discussions are aimed at strengthening collaboration between government and religious institutions to prevent conflict and promote lasting peace.
Tinubu stressed that the shared values across faiths — love for God and love for humanity — must continue to bind Nigerians together as one people.
“These shared values are at the heart of all great faiths and must continue to unite us as one indivisible, resilient and blessed nation,” he added.
The President further pledged to build on existing interfaith dialogues to deepen trust, reduce suspicion and foster peaceful coexistence nationwide.
He also commended Christians for their contributions to national development, particularly their role in caring for the vulnerable, promoting peace and strengthening community life across the country.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to use the Christmas season to reflect on unity, compassion and collective responsibility, calling on all citizens to reject violence, hate and religious bigotry.
