Former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Alhaji Lawal Musa Daura, has said he ventured into politics to save lives and restore security in Katsina State, describing himself as a “politics mechanic” called to fix deep-rooted problems confronting the state.
Daura spoke on Thursday in Katsina at a reunion of the Government College Funtua Old Boys Association, Class of 1969, where members endorsed his 2027 governorship ambition.
He said insecurity had crippled economic activities in the state, stressing that safety remained the foundation upon which other sectors could thrive.
“Whenever you see a mechanic with his instruments, you know there is a problem. There is truly a problem in our dear state. Security is the key that opens other keys. Without it, you cannot solve other problems,” he said.
The former spy chief recalled that some markets in Katsina previously operated at night but now struggled to function even during the day due to fear of attacks.
“Farming is the economy of the state and neighbouring states, but today it has been badly affected by insecurity. That is why I joined politics. It is not about power or money. The position I held was bigger than that of a governor, and I have made a name beyond this country,” he said.
Daura added that widespread abuses, including attacks on residents in their homes and on the highways, compelled him to seek political office in order to address the situation.
“I am happy that my colleagues have given me their support even before the start of the journey. With the help of Allah, we will do our best and succeed,” he said.
Speaking at the event, FOBA Chairman, Dr Aliyu Yahaya, said Daura’s security background positioned him to tackle the state’s challenges within a short time if elected.
Yahaya pledged that members of the association would mobilise votes for Daura once he secured the governorship ticket of any political party.
