Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has hosted Hajiya Aisha Buhari, widow of late President Muhammadu Buhari, along with her daughter Hanan and other family members, in Saudi Arabia.
The meeting, disclosed by Atiku on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, took place during both families’ pilgrimage to perform the lesser hajj, Umrah.
“I was honoured to host Hajiya Aisha Buhari, her daughter Hanan, and other family members during their visit to me in Saudi Arabia,” Atiku wrote, noting that the interaction was centered on religious observance rather than politics.
The trip marks Mrs Buhari’s first known visit to Saudi Arabia since the death of her husband in July 2025.
The late president’s remains were flown from London to his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, and other top officials.
Observers have noted the meeting’s significance given the political prominence of both Atiku and the Buhari family, though sources emphasize the private and cordial nature of the gathering.
Umrah, often undertaken for spiritual reflection and prayer, is a journey that attracts Muslims worldwide, particularly during periods of mourning or personal reflection.
