The Lagos State House of Assembly has earmarked N55.4 billion in the 2026 budget for the construction of permanent residential quarters for lawmakers and the beautification of its legislative complex, documents obtained by Platform Times have revealed.
A breakdown of the budget shows that N35.4 billion is allocated for “construction of Permanent Legislative Quarters for Honourable Members of the Assembly, processing of documents, architectural drawings, structural engineering, soil testing, pile work, and consultancy services.”
An additional N20 billion has been set aside for the construction of new fences, drainage channels, covering of gutters with slabs, landscaping, and overall beautification of the Assembly complex and lawmakers’ quarters.
In contrast, only N16 billion has been earmarked for “MDA-executed community-based capital infrastructural interventions,” highlighting a stark disparity in funding priorities.
A review of Lagos State’s 2025 budget performance shows a continued focus on lawmakers’ welfare and infrastructure. In the previous fiscal year, N4.5 billion was spent on forty 50KVA backup generators for Assembly members, while N3.6 billion was used to acquire properties in Lagos and Abuja.
Further allocations included N20.6 billion for the purchase of vehicles—comprising 40 utility buses, 40 backup cars, and 40 official vehicles for lawmakers—and N11 billion for renovations of the Assembly complex, covering the main legislative building, gatehouses, and car parks.
Another N30 billion was earmarked for fencing, landscaping, beautification, and the development of access roads to the complex.
These expenditures come amid ongoing public concern over Lagos State’s infrastructural challenges, including flooding and erosion in several areas, raising questions about the prioritisation of lawmakers’ amenities over critical public infrastructure.
The Assembly has yet to comment on the 2026 budget allocations or the criticism over spending priorities.
