A police investigation has formally indicted Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for allegedly making false claims that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his wife were involved in the murder of late Iniobong Umoren and the harvesting of her organs.
The report, dated 3 February 2026 and signed by Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede, was issued to Sandra Duru, President of The Unique Family Foundation, who petitioned the Inspector-General of Police in April 2025.
According to the petition, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly called Ms Duru on 27 March 2025, claiming that Mr Akpabio and his wife were responsible for Ms Umoren’s death. Ms Duru reported the allegation to police, prompting a formal investigation.
The police said their findings confirmed that the allegation was entirely false and baseless.
Forensic analysis verified the voice in the recorded call was human, but investigation into the murder case—including post-mortem reports, trial records, and interviews with family membersrevealed no organs were removed from the deceased.
Certified copies of the court records of Uduak Frank Akpan, convicted and sentenced to death for the murder in 2021, were also reviewed.
The report concluded:
“The information communicated by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was false and without any iota of truth. Mr Akpabio and his wife had absolutely nothing to do with the murder or alleged organ harvesting.”
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously been suspended by the Senate over unrelated allegations, including claims of sexual harassment against Mr Akpabio, which he denied.
The disagreements between the two lawmakers have been highly publicized, escalating tensions within the upper chamber.
The police report noted that although the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation initially filed criminal defamation charges against Akpoti-Uduaghan in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on 29 March 2025, the case did not proceed after Mr Akpabio opted to discontinue the prosecution.
Police commended Ms Duru for her “patriotism and courage” in reporting the allegation, which helped to clarify the controversy surrounding the case.
Attempts to reach Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for comment were unsuccessful, as calls to her known phone lines did not go through.
