… Corruption Continues To Cripple Public Services, Infrastructure

Nigeria has once again been ranked among the world’s most corrupt countries, according to the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International (TI).
The country occupies the 36th most corrupt position globally, maintaining the same ranking as in 2024 despite sliding in overall score.
The latest CPI, which evaluates 182 countries on perceived public-sector corruption, placed Nigeria alongside Cameroon, Guatemala, Guinea, Kyrgyzstan, and Papua New Guinea, each scoring 26 points on a scale where 0 represents extreme corruption and 100 reflects a very clean system.
TI’s report revealed that while Denmark, Finland, Singapore, and New Zealand topped the list of least corrupt nations, no African country made it into the top ten.
Within the continent, Seychelles, Cabo Verde, and Botswana were rated the least corrupt with scores of 68, 62, and 58, respectively.
Conversely, South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela were identified as the world’s most corrupt nations
Maíra Martini, TI’s Chief Executive Officer, warned that corruption continues to erode public trust and development worldwide.
“Corruption is causing underfunded hospitals, unbuilt flood defences, and undermines the hopes of young people,” she said.
According to Martini, only 31 countries have made significant progress in curbing corruption since 2012, while the rest have stagnated or worsened.
She further lamented the weakening of democratic checks, increasing restrictions on civic space, and the rise of unaccountable leadership globally.
“Without bold leadership to tackle abuses of power, transparency and accountability are compromised, and corruption thrives,” she added, urging governments worldwide to strengthen anti-corruption measures.
The CPI underscores the urgent need for Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts to move beyond rhetoric to tangible action, particularly in enforcing laws, enhancing transparency, and protecting whistleblowers.
