Labour Party chieftain, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as lacking political sense, while praising President Bola Tinubu for his focus and determination.
In an interview aired on TrustTV in January, Baba-Ahmed said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is “a coalition of politicians who do not have a Tinubu, a Buhari, or a Jonathan,” referring to Nigeria’s past leaders he considered strategic and pragmatic.
“They don’t have a Tinubu. Tinubu was focused, resourced, and determined. They don’t have it in ADC,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He added that if any of the ADC figures secure the party’s ticket, “others will have a problem,” citing Atiku, Amaechi, and Obi.
Baba-Ahmed also argued that former President Goodluck Jonathan had political sense, noting his 2011 election pledge not to contest in 2015, which he said set a precedent for promise-keeping in Nigerian politics.
However, Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, dismissed Baba-Ahmed’s claims as “absolute nonsense.”
Speaking to Peoples Gazette, Ibe said the ADC leaders are “mobilising Nigerians to provide viable opposition to oust Tinubu’s senseless government from office.”
Ibe added, “There is no sense in what he said. Nothing makes sense when Nigerians are being slaughtered, poverty is weaponised, and anti-corruption agencies are used as political tools to harass citizens. Baba-Ahmed needs to reflect on that.”
The latest comments have stirred fresh debate about political competence and leadership within Nigeria’s opposition parties, with analysts noting the growing tension between the Labour Party and ADC as the 2027 general elections approach.
