Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of attempting to coerce him to abandon political activities as a condition for his release from detention.
In a 30-page criminal complaint filed before a federal court, El-Rufai named ICPC chairman Musa Adamu Aliyu and four other agency officials, alleging that they told him he would only regain his freedom if he stopped participating in politics.
The former governor claimed that during his detention, ICPC officers, acting under the authority of the chairman, repeatedly warned that continued political engagement could prolong his confinement.
He argued that this amounted to an abuse of office and an attempt to infringe on his constitutional rights.
Paragraph 12 of the complaint outlines the alleged demand, while paragraphs 22 to 24 of the supporting affidavit detail repeated warnings linking his political activity to the duration of his detention.
The matter forms the basis of Count Six of the complaint, accusing the ICPC officials of wrongful confinement with intent to compel, contrary to Sections 264 and 267 of the Penal Code.
El-Rufai is urging the court to investigate the conduct of the ICPC officers, insisting that their actions were unlawful and aimed at restricting his participation in the political process.
The ICPC has not issued any public response to the allegations.
