The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration, reaffirming the country’s commitment to democratic governance and national unity.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo said the declaration aligns with Nigeria’s tradition of honouring June 12 as a defining moment in the nation’s political history, stressing that the date remains symbolic of the struggle for democracy, justice, and the will of the people.
He noted that Democracy Day is observed annually to recognise the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians who contributed to the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country, adding that their legacy continues to shape governance values.
According to him, the current administration remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions through adherence to the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
The minister also assured that the Federal Government, in collaboration with security agencies, would continue to intensify efforts to maintain peace and security across the country, describing a stable environment as essential for sustaining democratic gains and national development.
He urged Nigerians to use the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and renew their commitment to unity, civic responsibility and respect for constituted authority.
“As we mark this historic day, Nigerians are encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies in the character of its citizens,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo further called on citizens to actively contribute to efforts aimed at deepening democratic governance and fostering national cohesion.
June 12 is observed in honour of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest polls in Nigeria’s history.
