The Delta State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 202 suspects during coordinated raids on brothels, suspected drug dens and other identified criminal hideouts in Asaba, the state capital.
The operation, which was carried out on Saturday, also led to the impoundment of 25 vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles for alleged traffic and regulatory violations.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the operation was intelligence-led and aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating within the Asaba metropolis.
According to him, the raid was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Operations following credible intelligence generated by the State Intelligence Department on criminal hideouts, brothels and suspected illicit drug centres.
Edafe said police operatives stormed the identified locations in a coordinated operation, leading to the arrest of 202 suspects comprising 102 males and 100 females.
He said the suspects were arrested for alleged offences ranging from operating brothels to possession and sale of suspected illicit drugs, as well as other related crimes.
The police spokesperson added that the operation formed part of the command’s sustained efforts to rid the state of criminal elements through intelligence-driven policing and proactive law enforcement.
He further disclosed that five motor vehicles, 10 tricycles and 10 motorcycles were impounded during the exercise for alleged violations of traffic regulations, the state’s restriction on tricycle operations and the ban on motorcycles in designated areas.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining similar operations across Delta State to deny criminals safe havens.
He said the command would continue to intensify surveillance, intelligence gathering and enforcement operations to combat crime and maintain public order.
Oyeniyi also appealed to residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid the prevention of crime and the arrest of offenders.
He assured the public that intelligence-led operations would remain a key strategy in tackling criminality and enhancing security across the state.
