The Police Service Commission has dismissed four senior police officers and demoted 10 others after finding them guilty of various acts of misconduct, in what it described as a renewed effort to strengthen discipline and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
The disciplinary measures were approved during the Commission’s plenary meeting held at its headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the PSC’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Mr Torty Njoku Kalu.
The Commission said the four officers were dismissed after they were found culpable of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts considered unbecoming of public officers.
It added that 10 senior officers were reduced in rank as part of the disciplinary exercise. Those affected include three Superintendents of Police demoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent, two Deputy Superintendents reduced to Assistant Superintendent, and five Assistant Superintendents demoted to the rank of Inspector.
Beyond the dismissals and demotions, the PSC sanctioned 31 other officers over various disciplinary infractions.
According to the Commission, 10 officers received severe reprimands, five were reprimanded, three were issued warning letters, while one officer received a letter of advice.
The Commission also approved the compulsory retirement of two officers, saying the decision was taken “in the public interest.”
However, seven officers were cleared of all allegations after investigations found no evidence linking them to any wrongdoing.
Reacting to the decisions, PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, said the Commission would continue to enforce discipline and ensure misconduct among police personnel attracts appropriate sanctions.
He warned that the current board would not tolerate acts capable of undermining the integrity and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
Argungu, however, assured that officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary service would continue to receive recognition and motivation under the Commission’s reward system.
He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to promoting accountability, professionalism and public confidence in policing through strict enforcement of disciplinary standards.
