A father of 11, Lawal Hamisu, has approached a Sharia Court in Kaduna State, seeking an order compelling his 27-year-old daughter to accept a suitor and get married.
Hamisu, through his counsel, H.B. Debo, told Sharia Court II sitting at Magajin Gari on Tuesday that his daughter, Fatima Lawal, had completed her Higher National Diploma but had failed to present any serious marriage proposal despite attracting several admirers.
The complainant urged the court to direct his daughter to produce a suitable suitor and conduct the marriage, alleging that her mother had turned the children against him.
According to him, “She should get a suitor, present him in court and the court should marry her off since her mother has poisoned their minds against me.”
Responding to the claim, Fatima denied having any genuine marriage prospect, insisting that although she had admirers, none had formally proposed marriage.
She told the court that she currently had no serious suitor to present.
Presiding Judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, described the matter as delicate because it involved a dispute between a father and his daughter.
The judge said he would hold separate discussions with both parties to better understand the issues before offering further guidance.
He subsequently adjourned the matter until August 3 for ruling.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the case drew attention because of the father’s request for judicial intervention in securing a husband for his adult daughter.
