The Nigerian Army has arrested a soldier, Mohammad Yusuf, who was declared wanted over his alleged involvement in supplying military accoutrements to terrorists.
Yusuf, attached to the Nigerian Army Ordnance Kits Factory in Lagos, was apprehended by troops of the 7 Provost Group at Jidari Bus Stop in Maiduguri, Borno State, at about 6:30 p.m. on Friday while allegedly attempting to flee to neighbouring Cameroon.
The arrest came barely two days after the Army declared him wanted over allegations of illegally supplying military uniforms and other accoutrements to terrorist groups.
The Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to the statement, the suspect was intercepted following actionable intelligence indicating he was trying to escape across the country’s border.
The Army said preliminary investigations revealed that Yusuf absconded from his duty post on July 7 before relocating to Maiduguri, where he allegedly went into hiding in the Gomari Costain area of Jere Local Government Area with the assistance of an associate.
“The suspect is currently in the custody of the 7 Provost Group, where further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of his activities and identify possible accomplices,” the statement read.
The military described the arrest as a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out personnel whose actions undermine military discipline and national security.
It stressed that no individual, regardless of status or rank, would be shielded from prosecution if found to be aiding terrorism or engaging in other criminal activities.
Operation HADIN KAI also reiterated that there would be no safe haven for persons supporting terrorists, warning that all those involved in such acts would be tracked down and brought to justice.
The Army further appealed to members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies, noting that public cooperation remains vital to ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace across the country.
