The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Yoruba actress and producer, Temitope Kofoworola Osoba, popularly known as Tope Osoba.
The news of her death emerged on Tuesday after fellow actor Alesh Sanni announced it in an emotional post on Instagram, triggering an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans and admirers across social media.
Her family had yet to officially announce the cause of her death or release details of her burial arrangements as of the time of filing this report.
Osoba’s death comes about a year after she celebrated her recovery from breast cancer, a battle that earned her widespread sympathy and support within and outside the Nigerian movie industry.
In 2024, the actress publicly disclosed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer after detecting a lump during a self-examination. She underwent surgery and appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance to continue her treatment.
The appeal attracted support from several Nollywood stars, led by actress Foluke Daramola, who mobilised donations to assist with her medical expenses.
Following months of treatment, Osoba announced in 2025 that she had successfully overcome the illness and was ready to return to acting, a development that was widely celebrated by her colleagues and fans.
Renowned for her roles in Yoruba-language films, Osoba carved a niche for herself as a talented actress and producer whose performances endeared her to audiences across the country.
Beyond her contributions to the movie industry, she was widely admired for openly sharing her cancer journey, a move many said encouraged other patients facing similar health challenges to seek early medical attention and remain hopeful.
Since news of her death broke, social media has been flooded with tributes from actors, filmmakers and fans, many describing her as resilient, courageous and passionate about her craft.
Several mourners also recalled her determination throughout her battle with cancer, saying her story became a source of inspiration to many Nigerians confronting life-threatening illnesses.
Her death marks another significant loss for Nollywood, with colleagues remembering her not only for her talent but also for the strength and optimism she displayed during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
