The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo, has commended the Department of State Services for arresting and prosecuting suspected terrorists and bandits, saying the action will send a strong warning to criminal elements terrorising Nigerians.
Osifo spoke in Abuja on Tuesday, where he urged the DSS to sustain its operations against terrorists, bandits and other violent criminals responsible for attacks and loss of lives across the country.
The TUC leader said the arrest and prosecution of suspects were critical to restoring public confidence in the fight against insecurity.
“When they are arrested and prosecuted, the bad guys get the clear message,” Osifo said.
He also backed the position of the DSS leadership that terrorists and bandits whose activities result in the death of innocent Nigerians should face the death penalty.
According to him, imposing severe punishment on those convicted of deadly terrorist and banditry-related offences could serve as a deterrent to others who may want to engage in criminal activities.
“When that is done, the other bad guys will know it is no longer business as usual,” he said.
Osifo called for a sustained tempo of arrests and prosecution, stressing that the government must continue to take decisive action against criminal networks operating across the country.
He, however, said citizens should not only criticise the government when things go wrong but should also acknowledge positive actions and policies.
“When government does wrong things, we condemn them. When they do positive things, we are also duty bound to commend,” he said.
The TUC chairman also commended the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, for what he described as ongoing reforms within the service.
He urged the DSS boss to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity, particularly activities of terrorists and bandits threatening communities and the safety of citizens.
The call comes amid continuing security challenges in several parts of the country, with criminal groups blamed for attacks, killings, kidnappings and displacement of residents.
Osifo maintained that sustained security operations, arrests and effective prosecution would be essential to restoring peace and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are held accountable.
