The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that its official X account has been compromised in a cyberattack, warning Nigerians to disregard suspicious messages or announcements published from the account until further notice.
The military authorities said they were treating the incident as a cybersecurity matter and had activated technical measures to regain control of the account.
The Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, urging members of the public to exercise caution and rely on the military’s verified communication channels for information.
Uba said efforts were ongoing to fully restore access to the compromised account while measures had been put in place to prevent further unauthorised access.
He said, “Consequently, members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period.”
The development is significant given the role of the DHQ’s social media platforms in disseminating information about military operations, security developments and official responses to emerging threats.
The Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians that it remained committed to protecting the integrity of its information systems and ensuring that only credible and verified information about the Armed Forces of Nigeria reached the public.
The military urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against potentially misleading information that could be circulated through the compromised account.
It directed members of the public seeking official updates to use its verified Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms while efforts to recover the X account continue.
The DHQ said further updates would be issued as developments unfold.
