The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has described the 2027 general election as a battle against what he called “thieves”, accusing those in power of undermining the electoral process and mismanaging Nigeria’s economy.
Atiku, a former Vice President, made the allegation in a video shared on his X account on Wednesday while outlining his economic agenda ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He said, “We are competing with thieves. They stole the election. Now they have stolen the economy. They have stolen everything.”
The former Vice President also renewed his pledge to restore fuel subsidy if elected, insisting that his position had not changed despite comments attributed to one of his aides on the controversial policy.
Atiku argued that the removal of subsidy had worsened the economic hardship confronting Nigerians, particularly through higher transport and food costs.
According to him, government has a responsibility to cushion the impact of economic policies on citizens rather than expose households to unbearable financial pressure.
He said Nigeria had sufficient resources to provide relief for its citizens, promising to introduce a targeted fuel subsidy regime if elected.
Atiku said his administration would seek to reduce energy and transportation costs, increase Nigerians’ purchasing power and stimulate local production.
He also promised to support businesses, create an environment for economic growth and ensure that wages become more valuable to workers.
The ADC candidate said the next administration must address both economic and physical insecurity, arguing that Nigerians could not achieve prosperity in an environment where businesses and citizens remained vulnerable.
His latest position comes amid renewed debate among presidential contenders over the removal of fuel subsidy, which has significantly altered petrol prices and contributed to increased transportation and living costs.
Atiku said his proposed subsidy policy would be targeted, suggesting that government intervention should focus on protecting vulnerable Nigerians while reducing the burden of energy and transportation costs.
The former Vice President has continued to position the ADC ahead of the 2027 election as an alternative platform for Nigerians dissatisfied with the current administration’s economic policies.
He urged Nigerians to support policies that would improve household purchasing power, strengthen domestic production and provide greater economic security.
