A 500-level student of Fr Moses Adasu University, formerly Benue State University, has been arrested by the police after allegedly pouring hot water on her 200-level colleague following a disagreement.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the students’ residence in Benue State.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the arrest on Saturday, saying the command had commenced an investigation to establish what led to the altercation between the two students.
According to him, preliminary information indicated that the two students were living in the same room before the disagreement escalated.
He said the suspect allegedly boiled water, mixed it with salt and pepper, and poured the mixture on the victim before locking her inside the room.
Aondongu said other people later became aware of the incident, intervened and rescued the victim, who was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
He said the suspect was arrested and remained in police custody as investigation continued.
“Yes, it happened yesterday, Friday, August 28, 2026.
“From the information I have, both students were staying in the same room and had an issue. The suspect allegedly boiled water, added salt and pepper, and poured the mixture on the victim and then locked her inside.
“After some time, people became aware of what had happened and were able to intervene and rescue the victim. She was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment, while the suspect was arrested,” the police spokesperson said.
Aondongu, however, said the police were yet to establish the full circumstances surrounding the disagreement.
He added that both students were students of the university.
The victim was identified as Rose, a 200-level Political Science student, while the alleged attacker was identified as Felicia.
The Students’ Union President, Akighirga Vitalis, who visited the hospital with members of his executive, said Rose told the union that a disagreement between her and Felicia had preceded the alleged attack.
Vitalis said the students had been living together before personal disagreements reportedly strained their relationship.
He condemned the incident, describing the alleged attack as a serious assault on the safety and wellbeing of a fellow student.
“We are deeply concerned about this incident. The Students’ Union will follow this matter closely until justice prevails,” he said.
The union president said the students’ body would liaise with the police and other relevant authorities while monitoring the investigation and any disciplinary proceedings by the university.
He said that if the allegations against Felicia were established through due process, the union would support appropriate sanctions in line with the institution’s regulations.
“The Students’ Union will not condone violence or any conduct capable of endangering the life of another student,” Vitalis added.
The police investigation is expected to determine the circumstances that triggered the disagreement and the events leading to the alleged assault.
