The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for allegedly extorting unsuspecting candidates, warning other officials against exploiting applicants or compromising the integrity of its operations.
The Board disclosed this in its release bulletin on Monday, stressing that its crackdown on fraud and misconduct would not be limited to individuals operating outside the organisation.
JAMB said the dismissal demonstrated its renewed determination to rid the admission and examination system of corrupt practices while ensuring that its workforce also remained accountable.
The Board stated, “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for extorting unsuspecting candidates, in further demonstration of its renewed commitment to flushing out bad eggs from the system.”
The development comes amid the Board’s continuing efforts to protect candidates from fraudulent practices associated with admissions, examinations and other JAMB-related processes.
According to JAMB, staff members who abuse their positions or exploit candidates and members of the public will face disciplinary action in accordance with established rules.
It warned its workforce against engaging in any conduct capable of undermining the credibility of the Board or taking advantage of candidates.
“The Board once again warned all members of staff to desist from all forms of unwholesome conduct, particularly acts capable of undermining the integrity of the Board or exploiting candidates and members of the public, as such actions would attract severe consequences in accordance with established rules,” it said.
JAMB further stressed that its zero-tolerance policy on corruption applied equally to all categories of staff, regardless of their positions.
“The Board noted that the action sends a clear and unequivocal message that its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct applies to everyone, irrespective of status or position,” the statement added.
The Board said it would not shield officials found to have abused the confidence reposed in them by candidates or members of the public.
JAMB added that the same resolve it had deployed in tackling external fraudsters was now being applied to internal misconduct.
“The Board stressed that having dealt decisively with external fraudsters who seek to exploit candidates and members of the public, it would not shield or spare any of its own staff members who cross the line or abuse the trust reposed in them.”
The Board reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a professional and accountable workforce, saying the fight against fraud must begin from within the organisation.
It said any staff member whose conduct compromises its operations would be sanctioned in line with its established disciplinary procedures.
