A police corporal has allegedly shot dead a female colleague before taking his own life at ASCO Camp in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, involved Corporal Amos Yusuf and Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi, both serving officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident was reported at about 11:04 p.m., prompting the Divisional Police Officer in Ajaokuta to mobilise a team of officers to the scene.
The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat.
According to the command, preliminary findings indicated that Yusuf, who was reportedly on night duty, allegedly shot Onimisi before shooting himself.
Both officers were subsequently rushed to separate medical facilities, where they were confirmed dead. Their remains were later deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital.
The incident has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two officers, with the police saying investigations are ongoing to establish what transpired.
A report by LEADERSHIP had alleged that the deceased officers were involved in a romantic relationship that had recently broken down.
The report further quoted sources familiar with the incident as alleging that Yusuf was angered by Onimisi’s decision to end the relationship.
However, the police have not officially confirmed the alleged relationship or established it as the motive for the incident.
As part of its preliminary investigation, the police recovered an AK-47 rifle and four spent cartridges from the scene. The items have been preserved as exhibits.
The command disclosed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
It added that the motive behind the incident remained under investigation, urging members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers.
The command assured the public that verified updates would be made available as the investigation progressed.
