In a shocking incident that has left the residents of Abeokuta and its environs without electricity, nine transmission towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has collapsed due to the activities of vandals.

The towers, located along the Papalanto/Abeokuta 132kV Transmission line in the Obafemi Owode area of Ogun State, were said to have extensively vandalized, leading to their structural failure.

TCN, in its official statement on Tuesday, released this information on its Twitter handle Page.

The General Manager of TCN’s Lagos Region, Engr. Mojeed Akintola, in his statement said, “the towers collapse, was discovered yesterday (Tuesday) after a tripping was recorded, and a team was dispatched to trace the fault, leading to the discovery of the collapsed towers.

“As a result, Abeokuta and its environs are presently out of power supply even as efforts are ongoing to supply bulk electricity through an alternate line, to enable Ibadan DisCo to distribute electricity to its customers whose supply is affected by the incident.”

He however, expressed his dismay over the incident, highlighting the negative impact of such acts of vandalism on the company’s efforts to expand the power grid.

He emphasized that the resources that were supposed to be utilized for further improvements in the grid infrastructure of Ogun State would now be redirected to replace the vandalized towers.

The TCN however, appealled to the communities to work with her to protect our common national assets.
