    CLAIM
Several news reports claimed that Mohammed Abba Umar will step in as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after the Suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa.

    VERDICT: The claim is FALSE

    VERIFICATION
President Tinubu issued the suspension via a statement released on Wednesday through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

According to the statement signed for the president by Willie Bassey, OSGF spokesman, the suspension will allow for a proper investigation into his conduct while in office.

This is coming barely three weeks after a group – anti-corruption crusaders in Nigeria called for Bawa’s immediate resignation following Bello Matawalle, Governor of Zamfara State’s allegations of corruption against him.

Punch, PM News, Vanguard, Daily Trust and Thisday reported Mohammed Umar as DOP. Some of the reports have now been deleted but still being circulated.

Findings showed that Umar was DOP under Ibrahim Magu’s leadership as acting chairman. He acted as chairman when Magu was removed in 2020 till Bawa was appointed.

Umar was redeployed to the police in Kano where he now serves as the DCP SCID.

Checking through the agency’s website, in a news published on the 30th of May, 2023, CE Abdulkarim Chukkol, was reported as the DOP. There has been no news of a replacement since then.

The agency has also updated Chukkol as the Acting chairman with his former status being Director of Operations.

    CONCLUSION
The claim that Umar is EFCC DOP to replace Bawa is FALSE
