An aide to former governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel , Steve Oliyide has tackled the governor,Dapo Abiodun over his claim that Lagos depends on Ogun water works.
Oliyide in a statement on Monday shortly after the governor made the claim that the state water works supplies water to Lagos, described Abiodun’s statement as “absolute lie”.
Abiodun made this statement on Monday, while meeting with the participants of the Senior Executive Course 45, Group 1, of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, who came on a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The governor had said “On the issue of water, we have spent a lot of money on our water works. It will interest you to know that our water works from Ogun River, is what Lagos State depends on.
“We’ve invested a lot of money in our water works. What we need to do now is to be creative about reticulation and also provide water in all our major towns and cities.”
Faulting the governor, Oliyide who had worked as a Special Assistant on Information and Strategy to Daniel and also doubled as the Information Manager to the Ogun State Water Corporation between 2006 and 2011, said Lagos has its own water works in Iju in the state .
He said ” this is an absolute lie. Lagos State does not depend on Ogun State *water works*.
“It is either DA is ignorant or deliberately deceitful or mischievously manipulative. Lagos State has a Water Works in Iju area of Ogun State which takes its raw water from the Ogun River. This is different from depending on Ogun State waterworks
“Don’t forget I was a Special Assistant on Information and Strategy to the Governor of Ogun State and I also doubled as the Information Manager to the Ogun State Water Corporation between 2006 and 2011. I cannot sit by and allow such misrepresentation of facts from the state’s helmsman who is expected to know.
“It is quite improper and immoral for a State executive to elevate lies and deceit to the level of Statescraft and Fundamental Principles of State Policy.
“The real issue here is about Waterworks. Raw Water? Yes, the Ogun river supplies Lagos State through the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority which is a federal government agency.
” And that is because the water in Lagos State through the Ocean is salty and the process of getting drinking water from that is called desalination (removing salts from water takes a longer process and is usually more expensive). But Ogun State water Corporation or waterworks does not supply water to Lagos State. How do you supply Lagos State water when you have insufficient water for your own citizens?”
