Coup: Ex CBN Gov, Lamido Sanusi Meets With Niger Military Leaders

Former Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi, has recently visited Niger, to engage with the junta leadership.

This was gathered on Wednesday, through Sanusi’s Twitter handle, @MSII_dynasty, revealing that the meeting held at Niamey, Niger Republic.

The purpose and official capacity of Mr. Sanusi’s visit remain ambiguous at this juncture.

Notably, the former monarch maintains a close affiliation with Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who concurrently holds the leadership position within ECOWAS.

Also, Mr. Sanusi is the spiritual leader (Khalifah) of the Tijaniyah Islamic movement, an organization encompassing numerous adherents across West Africa, including Niger.

Accompanying Mr. Sanusi on this visit, presumed to have transpired on Wednesday, is the Emir of Damagaram from Zinder, situated in Niger’s Maradi region.

It is worth recalling that in the context of ECOWAS imposing sanctions on Niger following the recent coup, General Tchiani has displayed reluctance in entertaining most official delegations dispatched to the nation.

This includes reported refusals to meet with representatives from the UN, AU, and ECOWAS in a collaborative delegation.

Similarly, General Tchiani has declined engagements with an ECOWAS delegation under the leadership of former military figure Abdulsalami Abubakar, along with the US Acting Deputy Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland.

However, the forthcoming Thursday assembly of ECOWAS leaders is slated to review the prevailing situation in Niger, as it coincides with the culmination of the one-week ultimatum extended to the coup leaders for the restitution of power to President Mohamed Bazoum.
