In a tragic incident that unfolded on Wednesday, a soldier lost his life while on escort duty as armed robbers unleashed a deadly attack on a patrol van near the intersection of First Eastern Circular and Akpakpaba Roads in Benin City.

The Edo Police Command has confirmed the distressing event, highlighting the audacity of the robbers in looting “Ghana Must Go” bags believed to contain a substantial amount of cash.

The ill-fated patrol van was accompanying another vehicle laden with these telltale “Ghana Must Go” bags, which had aroused suspicions of carrying significant monetary value.

The Edo Police spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor saif that after the fatal shooting of the soldier, the robbers swiftly took advantage of the situation and plundered the bags, leaving his two surviving colleagues with no choice but to abandon the patrol van.

He said an ongoing investigation is underway to comprehend the intricate circumstances surrounding this brazen attack.

SP Nwabuzor stated, “Edo State Police Command can confirm that a soldier was killed in Benin on Wednesday.

” A good Nigerian reported the incident at the police station covering that neighborhood.

“The hoodlums carted away `Ghana-Must-Go’ bags believed to have been loaded with cash from the van.”

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses have described   a harrowing sequence of events that unfolded during the attack.

According to a witness,  four assailants executed a daring maneuver by driving an unmarked Toyota Camry car against the flow of traffic, directly toward the army vehicle.

As the situation escalated, two of the assailants disembarked from their vehicle, opening fire on the soldiers.

Trapped in the line of fire, the soldiers made a desperate attempt to escape. Unfortunately, one of them succumbed to the barrage of bullets, sealing his fate at the scene.

The witness emphasized the potential magnitude of the tragedy, had the soldiers retaliated, considering the busy nature of the area bustling with business activities.

As the investigation continues, the shocking incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers and security personnel while carrying out their duties, as well as the audacity of criminals who dare to strike in broad daylight.
