Members of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing at the International Christian Centre, Home for the Needy, Uhogua Camp in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State, experienced a joyous celebration as they marked the achievements of several first-class graduates and other students from various universities.
This camp serves as a refuge for over 3,000 IDPs, including children, men, women, widows, and students hailing from different ethnic backgrounds across the country.
Among the remarkable graduates, Amos Ishaku, a first-class graduate in Chemical Engineering from Edo State University, Iyamho, who had escaped from Boko Haram in 2014, expressed deep gratitude to the camp’s founder, Pastor Solomon Folorunsho, for providing him with the opportunity to rebuild his life.
Rufikatu Ali, originally from Borno State and a graduate from the Faculty of Law at the University of Benin, shared that her motivation for studying Law was to champion the cause of protecting the rights of the vulnerable and oppressed in society.
Despite these remarkable academic achievements, Pastor Solomon Folorunsho, the camp’s founder, revealed on Monday that the camp was facing challenges in providing food items and other essentials for the IDPs.
Consequently, the camp’s management called upon government authorities at all levels and compassionate Nigerians to come to the aid of these thousands of hungry IDPs in desperate need.
Folorunsho emphasized the critical nature of the food shortage, stating, “The food situation is number one. We don’t have food at all, and food is becoming increasingly expensive.
Even the donors themselves are struggling due to the current state of affairs in the country. The children are hungry.”
“These are children who had lost hope before, and now they have received a quality education. They aspire to pursue their studies to secure a better future for themselves and contribute positively to the nation,” he added.
Folorunsho also highlighted the urgent need for support, particularly in paying the school fees of students, some of whom are studying courses such as Medicine, Law, Business Administration, and others.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of extending a helping hand to these IDPs who have shown resilience and determination to improve their lives through education.
