Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and his aides are facing severe criticism and backlash from citizens over the handling of the N5 billion worth of palliatives intended to support vulnerable populations in the state.
The outrage was ignited when the Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, verbally attacked the Chairman of the Community Development Area (CDA) who expressed dissatisfaction with the meager palliative items allocated for distribution.
It should be noted that most states, including Ogun State, had not yet received the full N5 billion pledge from the Federal Government.
The state government had announced its plan to distribute over 300 bags of grains to vulnerable residents.
Many local government areas within the state, such as Abeokuta South and Remo North, successfully distributed their allocated palliatives.
However, controversy surrounded the distribution in Obafemi-Owode and other areas, leading some CDA Chairmen to create videos criticizing the government for providing only a single bag of grains for multiple households.
The angered Chairmen who called out the government’s inadequate distribution were subsequently targeted by the governor’s aides.
Lekan Adeniran, in defense of Governor Abiodun, resorted to name-calling, labeling the Chairmen as political enemies in his response.
Adeniran’s reaction received severe backlash from netizens, who criticized him for being unprofessional and emotionally charged in his response.
Governor Abiodun also called for restraint, emphasizing the importance of addressing criticisms professionally and fairly.
Citizens expressed their frustrations on social media, demanding transparency and accountability in the palliative distribution process.
They questioned the allocation of a single bag of rice to numerous households and raised concerns about the government’s failure to address critical issues such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security in the state.
The controversy shed light on the need for improved governance, better distribution transparency, and a more responsible approach to criticism.
The situation reflects a broader sentiment among Ogun State residents, who feel that their basic needs are not adequately addressed by the government.
While some of the governor’s media aides defended his administration, citing his achievements, the public’s discontent remains palpable.
