- A shocking incident unfolded in the Iba New Site area of Lagos on May 20, 2023, as a housewife, Nabuk Maddalene Afanideh, 36, her brother, Alexander Steve, 42, and sister, Roseline Sotola, 39, were arrested by operatives of the Zone 2 Command and subsequently arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court.
The trio stands accused of conspiring to brutally assault Nabuk’s husband, Mr. Jacob Daniel Ofam, leaving him in a coma.
The alleged assault took place after a dispute over an undisclosed sum of money that Nabuk had reportedly lent her husband for business purposes.
The situation escalated when Mr. Ofam refused to repay the loan, prompting Nabuk to seek assistance from her siblings.
According to the police, the trio forcibly entered the couple’s residence by pulling down the door.
Once inside, they subjected Mr. Ofam to a vicious attack, using an iron rod to beat him into unconsciousness. Subsequently, the assailants fled the scene, leaving their victim in a dire state.
Quick-thinking neighbors rushed Mr. Ofam to the hospital, where he was revived and is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries.
Following the disturbing incident, the victim filed a petition with the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Ali Mohammed, who directed a specialized police team to locate and apprehend the suspects.
The law enforcement team successfully tracked down the accused individuals at their hideout and subsequently filed charges against them.
The defendants have been charged with four counts related to assault, causing bodily harm, and malicious damage, in accordance with the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
During the court proceedings, the police prosecuting counsel, ASP Steve Molo, emphasized that the assault occurred as a result of the wife and her siblings taking the law into their own hands due to the financial dispute.
The charges brought against them are in accordance with Section 411, 350, 168(d), and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
In response, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Their legal representative, Barr. Anayo Agbo, requested bail for his clients, assuring the court that they would not flee if released.
The Presiding Magistrate granted each defendant bail in the amount of N100,000 with one surety, and the case was adjourned for further proceedings.
However, despite being granted bail, the Magistrate ordered that the defendants remain in custody at the Ikoyi and Kirikiri Correctional Facilities until they meet the bail conditions.
This bizarre and distressing incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of taking disputes into one’s own hands.
