A controversial cleric, Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, popularly known as Odumeje, who is based in Onitsha, has warned Nigerian pastors not to pray for Israel in its ongoing war with Hamas in Palestine.

He stated that they should instead pray for Nigeria and its president, who does not know left from right.

Addressing his congregation in a video that has gone viral on social media, Odumeje threatened to render any pastor who prays for Israel deaf and dumb.

He said, “Your own country, Nigeria, you have not prayed for your president, who does not know left from right. If I hear any pastor say ‘pray for Israel,’ and you pray even a little bit for Israel, I will make you deaf and dumb.”

Odumeje’s statement comes amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, a militant group that controls the Gaza Strip in the Palestinian territory.

The violence, which began on October 7, has claimed the lives of more than 4,000 people on both sides, according to reports.

Odumeje’s warning also follows the deletion of a prayer post by Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), who had earlier asked his followers to pray for Israel.

Adeboye faced backlash from some Nigerians who accused him of being insensitive to the plight of the Palestinians.
