The Sarkin Fulani of Kwara State, Alh Usman Adamu, alongside his brother and associate Gidado Idris, has been handed life imprisonment by the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.
The conviction stems from their involvement in the kidnapping and extortion of N1 million ransom from victim Abubakar Ahmad, who endured 20 days in captivity during the mid-2022 incident.
Kwara State’s Director of Public Prosecution, Idowu Ayoola, led the case, accusing the trio of conspiracy to kidnap and actual kidnapping.
Despite arguments asserting their absence from the kidnapping scene, Justice Adenike Akinpelu emphasized their shared intent to commit the crime, deeming physical presence irrelevant.
In her judgment, Justice Akinpelu expressed dismay at community leaders compromising the security of their subjects for monetary gain, declaring them guilty as charged.
Dismissing calls for leniency, she enforced a life sentence, mandated by Section 15 of the Lead State Anti-Kidnapping Law, running concurrently for all three convicts.
Furthermore, the court ordered a compensation of N600,000 to be paid to the victim, Abubakar Ahmad, highlighting the consequences of breaching the security of the community for personal gain.
