The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, expressed deep concern over the escalating involvement of Nigerian students in cybercrimes.
Speaking with a delegation from Daar Communication PLC at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, Olukoyede revealed that “seven out of 10 Nigerian students are involved in cybercrimes.”
Describing the situation as a “menace and cankerworm” in society, Olukoyede emphasized the urgent need for media intervention.
He urged the media, particularly Daar Communications, to design and implement programs aimed at enlightening youths about the dire consequences of engaging in cybercrimes.
The EFCC chairman underscored the gravity of the issue, stating that the prevalence of cybercrime among Nigerian youth is alarming.
He called for a broader enlightenment campaign to educate youths across the country about the severe implications of internet fraud.
“We are looking towards Daar Communications to enlighten our youths on the evils of cybercrimes. It is worrisome that seven out of ten students today are involved in cybercrimes,” said Olukoyede.
“These are the youths we are preparing to be leaders of tomorrow. The media should not relent in enlightening them on the evils of such criminal practices.”
As concerns grow over the increasing number of students engaging in cybercrimes, there is a pressing need for collaborative efforts from both law enforcement and media organizations to address this pervasive issue and safeguard the future of Nigerian youths.
